Signal Mask

Signal Mask is the Rook Runner Shell's Tactical ability in Marathon. When activated, it disguises the Rook's signature to appear as a UESC (United Earth Space Council) unit to NPC enemies, effectively masking the Runner's identity from AI-controlled threats. Enemy AI that would normally detect and engage the Rook instead registers the disguised signal as a non-hostile unit, allowing the Rook to move through AI-patrolled zones with significantly reduced detection risk.

Signal Mask is the cornerstone of Rook's low-risk resource gathering identity, and it is what most distinguishes this Runner Shell from all others. Where combat-focused Runners must clear AI patrols or avoid them entirely, Rook can walk through NPC-controlled areas under the cover of Signal Mask and prioritize looting without triggering firefights. This saves time, conserves ammunition, and dramatically reduces the health attrition that makes long runs risky. It is important to note that Signal Mask only affects NPC detection: other player Runners can still see and engage the Rook normally, making awareness of other squads in the zone a critical skill for Rook players who rely on this ability.
