CyberAcme is the default starting faction in Marathon and the first organization every Runner works with upon arriving on Tau Ceti IV. It is the industry leader in artificial intelligence technology on the colony, and its commercial interest in the planet is straightforward: gather data. CyberAcme deploys fully integrated Onboard Navigational Intelligence, or ONI, to support Runners during operations, with each ONI unit helping its assigned Runner navigate conditions across Tau Ceti IV while reporting back on the fate of New Cascadia. ONI is also the faction's in-game agent, guiding newly awakened Runners through the basics of survival and contract work.
Because CyberAcme unlocks automatically at the start of the game, it serves as the foundation of early progression for every Runner in Marathon. The faction anchors the introductory loop, providing immediate access to contracts and a clear on-ramp into the broader faction system. Its contracts cover a wide range of activities including combat, looting, datacard retrieval, TAD use, and consumable recovery, giving new players plenty of options for building reputation without committing to a highly specialized playstyle.
The CyberAcme upgrade tree is built around three practical pillars: inventory management, heat control, and looting efficiency. These upgrades improve the structural conditions of every run by increasing how much a Runner can carry, how quickly they can loot containers and bodies, and how long they can sprint and slide before overheating. As Runners progress through CyberAcme's 38 upgrade nodes, they unlock rank bonuses including Torso Implants, Backpacks, and eventually Deluxe Backpacks that dramatically expand carrying capacity per run.
CyberAcme also fields six Liaison contracts, one for each of the other factions, making it the most connected organization in Marathon's faction network. Its combination of universal accessibility, looting-focused upgrades, and broad contract variety makes it an excellent long-term investment even for Runners who eventually prioritize other factions. For players who want to maximize loot extraction and heat-efficient movement, CyberAcme's upgrade tree remains one of the most consistently rewarding progressions in the game.
