Compilers are the most commonly encountered members of the S'pht, a cybernetically enhanced alien species with a history intertwined with the UESC Marathon. The S'pht are creatures whose biological components, effectively complex mammalian-brain-like organs, are so deeply fused with their cybernetic housing that neither could survive without the other. Enslaved by the Pfhor and subjected to forced transformation, the S'pht Compilers were the frontline units of their oppressors' war machine for centuries. The AI Durandal eventually liberated them by destroying their Pfhor control mechanism in 2811 A.D. In the context of Marathon 2026, Compilers have taken up residence aboard the derelict UESC Marathon ship, which forms the basis of the Cryo Archive zone. Their presence aboard the ship, and the possibility of encountering a terrifying Compiler boss, represents one of the game's most significant lore-driven threats.
In combat, Compilers are floating cybernetic entities that attack by firing powerful energy bolts from the weapons integrated within their flowing cloaks. Each bolt is slow-moving but hits hard, and at close range there is little reaction time to dodge. At greater distances, runners with sufficient awareness can sidestep incoming bolts with relative ease, making range management the primary survival tool in a Compiler encounter. Some Compiler units carry cloaking devices, allowing them to partially obscure their position before attacking. Compilers are typically found near terminals and data infrastructure aboard the Marathon ship, suggesting they have interfaced with the vessel's systems for their own purposes. Engaging multiple Compilers simultaneously is hazardous, as tracking multiple slow-moving energy bolts from different directions becomes quickly overwhelming.
