Dire Marsh
intermediate
Dire Marsh is Marathon's intermediate-difficulty zone and the most ecologically distinctive map on Tau Ceti IV. Once the colony's agricultural research sector, this sprawling wetland biome was transformed when a phenomenon known as the Anomaly tore through the terrain, splitting the ground and suspending massive storage containers and chunks of rock in mid-air as if frozen by an invisible force. Nobody has confirmed who or what caused the Anomaly, though the UESC's presence in the surrounding structures suggests they were involved. The result is a swamp-wetland environment where floating terrain, dense fog, and waterlogged pathways create constant disorientation, forcing Runners to master a map that changes character dramatically between its flooded outer zones and the Anomaly's eerie gravitational center. Dire Marsh is the epicenter of whatever catastrophe struck Tau Ceti IV, and its atmosphere reflects that history with every ruined greenhouse, flooded field, and corrupted data terminal.
The map contains twelve named points of interest connected by both surface routes and an underground tunnel network. The tunnels are a defining feature of Dire Marsh: they allow rapid movement between locations but also create inevitable close-quarter confrontations with rival squads. The Anomaly sits at the map's center, surrounded by rotating elite UESC guards and drawing multi-squad convergence throughout every raid. Other high-value locations include the Quarantine zone, which boasts the highest loot density on the map; the Greenhouse, a partially intact agricultural facility with rich salvage; the AI Uplink, a critical node for data-based contract objectives; and the Complex and Bio-Research facilities, both of which anchor faction contract routes. The Maintenance area stands out as the single most contested point of interest: high loot value, intense PvP pressure, and key salvage opportunities make it rewarding but extremely dangerous.
Dire Marsh hosts faction contract objectives from all six Marathon factions. Traxus contract runners can find key terminals at Intersection, Complex, and Bio-Research, while CyberAcme intelligence objectives and MIDA disruption contracts also route through the map's central structures. The underground tunnel system makes squad rotations fast but unpredictable, and Runners who do not control tunnel chokepoints early often find themselves cut off from extraction. UESC patrols are heavier here than on Perimeter, reflecting the zone's intermediate threat rating, and the Anomaly's outer ring is effectively a permanent PvE gauntlet. For Runners seeking high-tier loot, the Algae Ponds, AI Uplink, and Quarantine form an efficient circuit, though all three see consistent traffic. Dire Marsh rewards map knowledge and rotation discipline more than any other zone in Marathon's surface tier.
