Outpost

advanced

Outpost is Marathon's advanced-tier surface zone and the most heavily fortified map available to Runners on Tau Ceti IV. Unlike the abandoned or overgrown environments of Perimeter and Dire Marsh, Outpost remains a functioning UESC facility: scan drones sweep the sky overhead, tripwire security systems line corridors and entryways, and UESC soldiers patrol in greater numbers and at higher tiers than anywhere else on the surface. Originally designed as a staging and logistics hub for planetary expeditions, the facility blends the character of a spaceport with a military installation, all set beneath a dark and stormy sky that reinforces the zone's hostile atmosphere. Runners must reach at least Runner Level 12 before gaining access to Outpost, a threshold that ensures only experienced players enter a zone where enemy encounters are nearly continuous and mistakes are rarely forgiving.

The map is compact but highly vertical, built around a central structure called The Pinwheel: a corkscrew multi-story building packed with tight corridors, alcoves, and overlapping sightlines. The Pinwheel is the primary loot destination on the map, hosting some of the highest-tier item spawns in the surface zone tier, but its noise-generating layout ensures that any Runner looting inside will alert nearby squads and UESC patrols alike. Outpost's loot system is unique among Marathon's surface maps in that most high-value items are locked behind a keycard clearance system. Green keycards, found on desks and counters inside buildings, open standard secured rooms. Red keycards, located on rooftops, grant access to elevated caches. Orange keycards, retrieved from white box machines scattered across the facility, unlock the most valuable storage areas. This layered access system rewards methodical exploration over rushing and punishes squads that skip security routes.

Outpost is one of the most contested zones in Marathon for faction contract objectives, particularly those tied to Traxus, Arachne, and Sekiguchi, whose contracts frequently direct Runners toward secured data nodes and high-value salvage locked behind the facility's clearance system. Weather hazards add an additional environmental layer to the challenge, creating windows of reduced visibility that can either shield a squad's movements or mask an enemy ambush. Loot quality on Outpost consistently outpaces the other surface maps, making it the top destination for Runners who want to fund loadout upgrades and stockpile gear before attempting the endgame Cryo Archive zone. For squads willing to manage the keycard chain, coordinate against elite UESC units, and contest The Pinwheel, Outpost offers some of the best risk-to-reward extraction runs available in Marathon's Season 1 content.
